Jose Miguel Arroyo, the husband of former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, arrived Thursday evening from his week-long trip in Japan and Hong Kong. ANC reported that Mr. Arroyo said his trip was "unsuccessful" because a Japanese businessman backed out of a possible investment in the country's power industry.
Mr. Arroyo said the investor decided against investing in the Philippines owing to the present state of the country. Mr. Arroyo did not elaborate.
In April, the Sandiganyan allowed Mr. Arroyo to travel to Japan and Hong Kong.
Mr. Arroyo is a co-accused of his wife, former polls chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr., and former Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza in a graft case stemming from the alleged graft-ridden $329-million deal with China's ZTE for the national broadband network project. The deal was scrapped following revelations of alleged irregularities.
The Arroyos and Abalos have been arraigned by the court and have entered a "not guilty" plea. (www.philstar.com)
