The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will conduct a special voters’ registration for persons with disabilities (PWD) on March 10, 2012. Qualified to register are PWDs aged 18 years old and above in five cities in Negros Oriental.
The said voters’ registration for PWDs will be held simultaneously in the cities of Bayawan, Dumaguete, Tanjay, Bais and Canlaon.
Comelec is holding the special registration in coordination with the Social Welfare and Development Offices in said cities.
“This day will be exclusively for PWDs to be registered as voters,” said Hazel Aurea, certified voters list technician at the Comelec provincial office here.
Requirements for registration include a valid ID card or birth certificate. Aurea also urged the registrants to bring ball pen for faster processing of documents.
The special registration in Dumaguete City will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the PWD Training Center beside the City Social Welfare and Development Office along Rizal Boulevard, according to an advisory from Dumaguete City Handicapped Association President Aladdin Rosalinas.
Aurea explained that the special registration is also done to make COMELEC’s services accessible to the PWDs.
“For example in Dumaguete City, the PWDs have to climb up to the second floor of the Public Market building where the COMELEC office is located. On March 10, we are holding the registration in venues that will be easy for them to access,” she said.
Comelec is appealing for PWDs in said cities to sign up and be counted in view of the low turnout of registrants in last year’s voters registration.
“In our province-wide registration for PWDs last year, only very few of them showed up,” said Aurea.
Comelec has earlier announced a Visayas-wide PWD satellite registration for this month in provinces covered by Regions 6, 7 and 8.
A report released by Vera Files said that based on Comelec records, the provinces of Western Samar, Negros Oriental, Leyte, Capiz, Cebu, Northern Samar, Bohol, Antique, Eastern Samar, Aklan and Iloilo are among the top 30 provinces with the highest registered PWD voters as of July 2011.
